'Boys Beat CSU, Crack Top 25

November 9, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming utilized a blistering first half, withstood a third-quarter Colorado State comeback, and won for the eighth time this season with a 27-19 victory over the Rams at Ft. Collins before an ESPN2 national television audience.

The Cowboys scored 10 in the first quarter and 14 in the second to shock the fifth-largest crowd in CSU history, on a snowy night in Hughes Stadium. The Rams scored 13 in the third quarter, but the Pokes shut them down in the fourth.

Quarterback Jay Stoner threw for a touchdown during a 16 for 28 passing night and rushed for one. His major target was wide receiver Kofi Shuck who had a career night with seven receptions for 122 yards and the touchdown.

Marques Brigham carried the ball 24 times for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Wyomings defense was outstanding. Led by sophomore free safety Al Rich, and sophomore nose tackle Jeff Boyle, and strong safety Greg Van Leer the Cowboy defense dominated CSU in the first half. For the game, the high-octane Ram rushing game gained just 116 total yards. Rich had 12 tackles and interception, while Van Leer picked off two.

The win was Wyomings seventh in a row, and lifted its record to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in WAC play. The win lifted the Cowboys to 25th in both the ESPN/USA Today and the Associated Press polls.

Wyoming now closes out the home season Saturday with the big one. Number 20 Air Force brings its 8-1 record into War Memorial Stadium for a game that should determine the WAC Mountain Division Championship.
