Air Force Shuts Down Wyoming

November 14, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

In the Western Athletic Conferences biggest game of the year, it was defense that dominated the day as Air Force utilized 10 second-half points to beat Wyoming, 10-3 in War Memorial Stadium.

It was the Cowboys only home loss of the season, and halted a seven game winning streak.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half as each defense scuttled the offense possession after possession. Air Force finally broke through with 11:47 remaining in the third period on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Blane Morgan to running back Qualario Brown.

The Cowboys came back with a 28-yard field goal from Aaron Elling with 2:23 left in the third, but that was the only scoring they would do. The Falcons added a field goal with 6:58 remaining in the game.

Led by linebacker Brian Brown, safeties Al Rich and Trent Gamble and tackle John Mathis the Wyoming defense was brilliant. Air Force came into the game as the only collegiate team to have scored 30 or more points in every game.

Offensively the Cowboys could managed just two third-down conversions in 11 tries and missed on both of their fourth-down conversion attempts. Wyoming had just 28 yards rushing and 171 passing.

The Cowboys close out the regular season next Saturday at Tulsa. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MST.
