LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming's 2012 football schedule was released on Friday and includes home games against Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State. The Cowboys' will face six teams in 2012 that earned bowl bids a year ago, with four of those bowl teams visiting Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium.
Wyoming, coming off its own appearance in the 2011 Gildan New Mexico Bowl, will face a 2012 schedule where half of its 12 opponents played in bowls in 2011. Wyoming will host bowl teams Toledo, Air Force, Boise State and San Diego State in Laramie this coming season. The Pokes will travel to 2011 bowl participants Texas and Nevada.
"I think the schedule lays out well," said head coach Dave Christensen. "It will be a challenging schedule, but I think it is a great home schedule for our fans. I like our bye falling right before we begin conference play. If you are going to have a bye, it is probably best to have it right before we play our first conference game at Nevada.
"With the addition of Hawai'i, Fresno State and Nevada to an already talented group of teams, this league should be very competitive. We're looking forward to the challenge."
Wyoming will open the 2012 season on the road at Texas on Saturday, Sept. 1. It will be the final game of a three-game series between the Cowboys and Longhorns. Texas defeated California (21-10) in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. The following weekend, UW's home opener will feature the Toledo Rockets on Saturday, Sept. 8. Toledo defeated Air Force (42-41) in the 2011 Military Bowl. The other non-conference home game for the Cowboys this season will be against Cal Poly on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Both Toledo and Cal Poly will be making their first trips to Laramie. Wyoming has played Toledo only one other time, defeating the Rockets 20-15 in Toledo in 2010. Wyoming and Cal Poly have never played each other in football prior to this season.
Wyoming's other non-conference game in 2012 will be played in Moscow, Idaho, on Saturday, Sept. 22 against the Idaho Vandals of the Western Athletic Conference.
The conference slate of home games features longtime rivals Air Force and Colorado State visiting Laramie on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 3, respectively. The Cowboys will also host Mountain West members Boise State and San Diego State in their final year as conference members. The Broncos, who defeated Arizona State (56-24) in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl, will visit Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 27. San Diego State, which lost (30-32) to Louisiana-Lafayette in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, will be the Pokes's season-ending game on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Cowboys' first Mountain West game of 2012 will be played against first-year conference member Nevada in Reno, Nev., on Saturday Oct. 6. Nevada lost (17-24) to Southern Miss in the 2011 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. UW will also play road games: at first-year Mountain West member, Fresno State, on Saturday, Oct. 20; at New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 10; and at UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The Mountain West decided to release the 2012 football schedule on Friday to allow MW fans to make preliminary plans for the upcoming football season. The exact game times and television coverage of all games will be released at a later date by the Mountain West and its television partners. A select number of game dates may be moved to non-Saturday dates to accommodate television coverage, so fans should be aware that the dates for a limited number of games conference-wide may still change when the 2012 television package is released later this spring.
