LARAMIE, Wyo. -
With his team one third of the way through spring practice, Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl told media after Wednesday morning's practice that the first scrimmage of spring football would likely be a lengthier scrimmage to provide the coaches a good early evaluation of their team. Bohl added the length of Saturday's initial scrimmage would depend somewhat on how healthy his team was going into Saturday.
Saturday's scrimmage will be run like a normal practice, with media allowed to shoot the first 20-30 minutes of practice. The scrimmage itself will be closed. The exact time of Saturday's practice has yet to be finalized.
Wednesday saw the Cowboys complete their fifth of 15 spring practices.
Bohl added that Saturday's scrimmage will likely pit the No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offensive and defensive units against one another.
"We'll do rotations of 1s versus 1s and 2s versus 2s," said Bohl. "How many reps we'll take will be contingent upon our health at that time, but I think it's going to need to be a pretty robust day.
"There is only so much you can do defensively when you're tagging off (rather than tackling), and the NCAA limits the number of times you can go live tackling to the ground, Saturday is going to need to be one of those practices. There is a big difference between a guy looking like he can make a tackle and the ones who actually can."
On the offensive side of the football, Bohl was asked to evaluate the development of the Cowboy offensive line through the first week of spring drills.
"Putting in a new offensive scheme, the offensive line has a lot to learn, and we probably aren't as far along as we'd like. I know we're not as far along as Coach (Scott) Fuchs would like," said Bohl.
"I think some elements of the run game are good. You know you don't gain a lot of yardage going east and west. Our backs have to get in the mindset of getting north and south a little bit more. I don't know if we made as much progress today as we'd like. We'll look at the tape, but I saw too many times when our backs were skedaddling around too much instead of sticking their foot in the ground and going north and south."
On defense, the first-year head coach of the Pokes was asked to evaluate the progress of the linebacking corps thus far in spring camp.
"We're probably behind there a little bit," said Bohl. "We run a pro-style, Tampa-2 defense, a pure NFL system on defense, and as the result of that there is a lot that goes on in a linebacker's head. Most college systems the linebackers are in their gaps, and they don't have to move around a bunch, but our guys do a lot.
"Coach (Steve) Stanard is doing a great job with them. We have a pretty seasoned group of guys there, but it's just all new and it is very complicated."
And when asked about the play of the secondary through the first five practices, Bohl commented, "I think our corners have probably come to the forefront a little bit more. There's going to be a lot of times where we'll probably play with three of them.
"So much of what our safeties do is dependent on run fits. I know that most time people think of safeties as deep middle players, and we'll have deep middle players or deep half players occasionally, but our safeties are going to be actively involved in a variety of facets of our defense. A lot of that will show up on Saturday in our scrimmage."
The Pokes will return to the practice field on Friday, April 4 for an 8:15 a.m. practice.
The first 30 minutes of practices are open to the media and public and closed after the first 30 minutes.
The Spring Game on Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m. will be open to the media and public.
