LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboy football team held their second practice of the spring on Wednesday. Like Monday's opening practice, the Cowboys held a two and one-half hour practice session inside War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Wednesday's practice focused on adding some of the outside running game to the offense, as well as the Cowboys' screen passing series. Defensively, the Cowboy coaching staff worked on installing their pressure package. On special teams, the Pokes began installation of their kickoff returns.
"I've seen some very positive things in our first two practices," said Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn. "I thought our kids maintained their focus really well throughout the two practices. We're throwing a lot of information at these kids right now -- installing new offensive and defensive systems, with new terminology. The offense did a good job of getting out of the huddle getting in the right formations. We showed the kids a little bit of shifting, putting men in motion. The defense worked on making their adjustments based on the offense's formation, and I thought our defensive guys did a good job of picking up those adjustments. We even worked on a few audibles at the line of scrimmage
"I was just really impressed by the quality of the practices and the focus of our young men.
"Our players are taking to the coaching, and our coaches are doing a good job of teaching these young men how we want to do things.
"There are so many little things that you have to work on in the first couple of practices that you take for granted when you've been with a group of kids for a couple of years -- the huddle, the play calls, the snap count, the audibles, the cadence and the terminology of how plays are numbered in our system.
"Now once we've got past that initial phase, we'll continue to add more plays each practice. We installed five variations of the running and passing games in the first practice, and we added about five more run and pass packages on the second day. Things begin to get a little more complicated as we go on, and it is important that our players are able to retain the information as we move on in the spring."
One position change that was experimented with on Wednesday was moving strong safety Tom Vincent to weakside linebacker.
Last year's starting strong safety, Guy Tuell, will also be competing at the weakside linebacker position, but is unable to practice indefinitely as he is recovering from a cut on the bottom of his foot. Wide receiver Malcom Floyd was held out of Wednesday's practice due to a hamstring strain he suffered on Monday. Tight end Marshall Schaap is still recovering from a knee injury that resulted in him missing the entire 2002 season.
The Cowboys first practices in full pads will be on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5. With snow in the forecast for later this week, those practices are currently scheduled indoors in War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Glenn also commented on how impressed he was with the leadership through the first two practices.
"If you look at your team as starting at the quarterback position, we feel really good about the command that Casey (Bramlet) seems to have already," commented Glenn. "I certainly think Derek Armah (running back) has stepped up as a leader. T.J. (Gottschalk, linebacker) is obviously the bell cow of our defense. But the leadership has really come from across the board -- from an outstanding group of receivers, to members of our offensive and defensive lines, our linebackers and secondary. All the guys are giving us a good effort."
Glenn said that one change to the spring practice schedule was made on Wednesday. The week preceding Easter weekend, the Cowboys will practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14-16, instead of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of that week.
In terms of 11 on 11 scrimmaging, there are still only two dates scheduled -- Saturday, April 12 and Saturday, April 26.
