LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The first depth chart of 2012 spring drills was released for the Wyoming Cowboys on Monday, April 9. Head coach Dave Christensen and his staff released the depth chart following evaluation of their first full scrimmage that took place prior to Easter break.
Several key returnees have been limited during spring practice due to injuries from which they are recovering. Because they have not participated in spring scrimmages, those individuals are listed at the bottom of their positions and listed as "INJURED" on the depth chart. Included in that group are three returning starters: senior wide receiver Chris McNeill; senior strong safety Luke Ruff; and sophomore quarterback Brett Smith. McNeill and Ruff both earned Second Team All-Mountain West honors in 2011, and Smith was the Mountain West Freshman of the Year. Other players listed as injured on the first spring depth chart are three senior linebackers: Ghaali Muhammad, who played running back in 2011 and missed the final five games of the season due to injury; Oliver Schober, who missed all of the 2011 season due to injury; and Patrick Hartford, who was a key contributor on special teams last season. Senior offensive tackle Kyle Magnuson, who played in nine games in 2011 and started two, and redshirt sophomore running back Nehemie Kankolongo, who missed the entire 2011 season due to injury, are also listed as injured.
"We feel that we've been able to get some good evaluations of our healthy players through the first half of spring drills," said Christensen. "We have seven practices remaining and with two more scrimmage situations, that should provide us a good starting point heading into fall camp, but the kids know that the depth chart is up for competition every practice and is constantly changing based on their performance. It would be nice to have all of our key players out there in full contact, but we expect them to all be healthy by the time we open fall camp."
Christensen said that the next depth chart update wouldn't come until the conclusion of spring drills.
Wyoming's next spring scrimmage is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11 at 4 p.m. in War Memorial Stadium, and the Cowboys will wrap up spring drills with the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. in War Memorial Stadium. Both of those scrimmages are open to the public.
