April 19, 2007

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

In the first week of play in NFL Europa, a former Wyoming Cowboy earned recognition as the league's Defensive Player of the Week. Ron Rockett, who is a member of the Frankfurt Galaxy was named Defensive POW for his effort versus the Amsterdam Admirals on Saturday, April 14.

Rockett recorded a team-best eight solo tackles, one interception and two passes defended in Frankfurt's 30-14 win over Amsterdam. In the third-quarter, Rockett intercepted a pass of Amsterdam quarterback Drew Olson that led to a Galaxy field goal as Frankfurt took its first step in defending last season's World Bowl XIV crown.

Rockett had previously faced Olson once before in the 2004 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl, when Olson was the starting quarterback for UCLA and Rockett was the starting strong safety for the Cowboys. Wyoming won that bowl matchup by a score of 24-21.

Rockett is in his first season playing in NFL Europa. He was a 16th round pick in this past season's NFL Europa draft of free agents. Rockett is currently not affiliated with any NFL franchise.

Another quarterback on Amsterdam's team is former Wyoming Cowboy Corey Bramlet. Bramlet was originally signed as a free agent by the New England Patriots in May of 2006, but is currently not affiliated with any NFL franchise. Bramlet is in his first season playing in NFL Europa. He came off the bench to relieve Olson in last Saturday's game. Bramlet carried the ball one time for five yards. He was 0 for 3 in passing on the day.

Two other former Cowboys playing in NFL Europa this season are Bramlet's older brother, Casey Bramlet, who is a quarterback with the Hamburg Sea Devils, and wide receiver Jovon Bouknight, who is playing for the Cologne Centurions.

Casey Bramlet is currently under contract with the NFL's Washington Redskins, and is in his second season playing for the Sea Devils. He started this past week in Hamburg's 24-18 loss to Cologne. Bramlet completed 14 of 21 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Bouknight was originally signed as a free agent by the NFL's Carolina Panthers in May of 2006. He signed a new free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 17, 2007. This is Bouknight's first season playing in NFL Europa. He started at wide receiver last Saturday for Cologne, and had one catch for eight yards in their win over Bramlet's Hamburg team.

The other players named NFL Europa Players of the Week in Week 1 of this season were: Offensive Player of the Week running back Derrick Ross of the Cologne Centurions (Kansas City Chiefs) and Special Teams Player of the Week kicker Andrew Jacas of the Berlin Thunder.
