COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming senior strong safety Luke Ruff has been named to the watch list for the 2012 Lott Trophy, which was released Monday.
Ruff, a product of Castle Rock, Colo., recorded 102 tackles (54 solo), 2.0 tackles for loss (-4 yards), two pass breakups and one forced fumble last season. He contributed to a Wyoming defense that ranked third in the Conference in pass defense, allowing only 199.6 yards per game through the air.
Ruff was named as one of four Wyoming team captains for the 2012 season.The Mountain West is one of six leagues (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) with multiple student-athletes named to the 42-person watch list.
Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award is given to a student-athlete who exhibits the same characteristics Ronnie Lott embodied during his Hall of Fame playing career: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.
Boise State senior linebacker J.C. Percy was the other MW defender named to the watch list. Percy, a native of Blackfoot, Idaho, tallied 48 tackles (19 solo), one interception, one forced fumble and two pass breakups in 13 games last season. Boise State's top-returning tackler, Percy has appeared in each of the Broncos' 40 games since his debut season in 2009.
Voters for the Lott Trophy include selected members of the national media, previous finalists, members of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation Board of Directors, the Legends Coaches and distinguished alumni of various schools around the nation. The winner, who will be announced at the annual black-tie gala in December, receives $25,000 for his institution's general scholarship fund.
Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly was last year's Lott Trophy recipient.
