LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming head football coach Dave Christensen announced on Wednesday that Derrick LeBlanc has been hired as a new defensive line coach for the Wyoming Cowboys. LeBlanc's hiring was officially announced upon the completion of his contract with Wyoming. He comes to Wyoming from LSU, where he was an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator from 2008-11. Prior to working in the LSU Athletics Department, LeBlanc was the defensive line coach at Missouri State for two seasons in 2006 and `07.
LeBlanc and current Cowboy assistant coach Matt Rahl will team to coach the Wyoming defensive line this coming season.
"I am extremely pleased we have been able to add Derrick LeBlanc to our coaching staff," said Christensen. "He comes to us from LSU where he was part of a very successful program. He has a lot of experience working with some outstanding football coaches. Among the coaches he has worked with is a gentleman by the name of Pete Jenkins (retired defensive line coach formerly with LSU and the Philadelphia Eagles), who we did some work with this past winter to school our defense. Derrick is a very strong family man with high morals, and adds another successful coach to our staff."
"What a great opportunity to be here in Wyoming" said LeBlanc. "Coach Christensen has done a great job over the last three years. To be given the opportunity to come here and help build on the success that Wyoming has had over the past several years is something I know will be a great experience for me and my family."
LeBlanc was a four-year football letterman at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., from 1992-96. He played both defensive and offensive line during his playing career, and earned Southland Conference All-Academic honors as both a junior and senior.
He began his coaching career in 1997 at Breaux Bridge High School in Breaux Bridge, La., where he was the offensive and defensive line coach for three seasons from 1997-99.
In 2000, LeBlanc accepted a graduate assistant position at LSU. LeBlanc assisted then defensive line coach Pete Jenkins in coaching the defensive line, as well as assisting the strength and conditioning staff. The Tigers earned a bid to the 2000 Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl where they defeated Georgia Tech, 28-14.
After the 2000 season at LSU, LeBlanc was offered his first full-time college coaching position at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark. He coached the defensive line and was the school's strength and conditioning coordinator for four seasons from 2001-04.
LeBlanc moved on to Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Ark., for the 2005 season, coaching the defensive line and serving as the team's academic coordinator.
He became the defensive line coach at Missouri State in Springfield, Mo., in 2006 and coached there for the 2006 and 2007 seasons under head coach Terry Allen.
He returned to LSU in 2008 and has worked with the Tiger football team the past four years. In addition to serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator for LSU football, LeBlanc assisted with on-campus recruiting. During the past four years, the Tigers: captured the 2008 Chick-fil-a Bowl Championship over Georgia Tech, 38-3; faced Penn State in the Capital One Bowl following the 2009 season, losing 19-17; defeated Texas A&M, 41-24, for the Cotton Bowl Championship following the 2010 season; and in 2011 captured the SEC Championship and earned a berth in the BCS National Championship Game, before falling to Alabama.
In 2004, LeBlanc participated in the NFL Minority Coaches Fellowship Program, working with the Chicago Bears. He also attended the NCAA Men's Football Coaching Academy in Indianapolis, Ind., in the summer of 2007.
LeBlanc earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Northwestern State in 1997, and completed his master's degree in sports administration at LSU in 2002.
He and his wife, Niema, have two sons, Dayton and Derrick, and one daughter, Kennedy.
