Finally Reaching The Top
Until the late 1940s, Cowboy fans had cautious optimism when it came to their team's chances in conference play. There were good teams in previous seasons, but a league title was a distant dream. That all changed in 1949. Two years after hiring head coach Bowden Wyatt, the Pokes were primed for a run to the Skyline Conference title. In 1948, despite going just 4-5, Wyoming showcased a high-powered offense featuring 270 points over nine games. That point total was aided by the contributions of Wyoming Hall of Famer Walker "Sonny" Jones, an all-conference tailback who rushed for 680 yards and scored 54 points.
The next season, the powerful offense was back, but these Pokes could play a little defense, too. UW posted six shutouts in 1949, and held opponents to a paltry 6.5 points per game. That enabled the Cowboys to go 9-1 for the season to win the Skyline Conference regular-season title for the first conference championship in program history. As a senior in 1949, Jones teamed with Eddie Talboom, another UW Hall of Famer, to become Wyoming's tailback "Touchdown Twins", and again earned All-Conference honors. That year, Talboom and Jones finished one-two in the league in scoring and Jones rushed for 817 yards and scored 78 points, ranking sixth in the nation and earning AP honorable mention All-America honors.
Other highlights of the season included sweeps of the Utah and Colorado schools and a 103-point effort in a win over Northern Colorado.
