LARAMIE, Wyo. -
1950 Undefeated Season
Led by eventual Hall of Fame Coach Bowden Wyatt and captained by Dick Campbell, the Pokes rolled their way to the very first undefeated season in school history in 1950. Opening the year against Montana State, Wyoming rolled to an easy 61-13 victory at home before defeating nationally ranked Baylor 7-0 in the dedication of War Memorial Stadium on Sept. 23. The Cowboys strolled through the month of October, defeating Colorado State (34-0), Utah State (40-7), Utah (53-13) and New Mexico (44-0).
The month of November proved to have similar results as UW beat Idaho in a tight 14-7 win before easily handling BYU, 48-0. The Cowboys closed the regular season on Nov. 23 at Denver, coming away with a resounding 42-12 victory. Following a perfect 9-0 start, the Cowboys received their first-ever bowl bid as they were invited to the Gator Bowl to be played on New Year's Day, 1951, against Washington and Lee of the Southern Conference. Wyoming won the game by a 20-7 score, a fine finish to a fantastic 10-0 season. Wyatt was named the 1950 Skyline Conference Coach of the Year following the historic season.
