Wyoming senior running back Shaun Wick was selected to the 2015 Doak Walker Award Watch List on Thursday. It was the first time in Wick’s career that he was named to the list. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced the preseason candidates for the 2015 Doak Walker Award. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
A native of Oxnard, Calif., Wick enters his senior season with 2,082 career rushing yards, and needs only 42 rushing yards to enter the UW Career Top 10. He already ranks eighth in career rushing touchdowns at Wyoming, with 19. Wick had an outstanding junior season in 2014 despite missing three games with a broken hand. He rushed for 753 yards on the year averaging 83.7 yards per game. He ranked fourth in the Mountain West and 21st in the nation in average yards per carry (5.98 yards per carry) in 2014. Wick recorded four 100-yard rushing games as a junior, including: 134 rushing yards against Montana; 122 rushing yards at national runner-up Oregon; 121 yards at Hawai’i; and 111 yards rushing versus Florida Atlantic.
His sophomore season, Wick had a breakout season, finishing with 979 yards and nine rushing TDs. He averaged 82 yards per game, and posted the third-best rushing day in Cowboy history with 234 yards and a score against San Jose State. Wick had four 100-yard rushing games as a sophomore. In addition to his 234 at San Jose State, he rushed for 116 versus New Mexico, 110 at Idaho and 101 at Nebraska.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists on November 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the three finalists, who will be announced on November 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 30 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2015 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 10, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas in early 2016.
The award, which will name its 26th recipient in 2015, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker.
