LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Athletics Department announced on Tuesday that its fund drive for the Paul and Marge Roach Hall at Memorial Lobby has already raised $100,000, which is half of the projected goal for the renovation. That $100,000 was raised in a mere one month.
The Roach Hall will be located in the War Memorial Fieldhouse second floor lobby in the south end of the Fieldhouse. Included in the $200,000 renovation of the area will be: an area documenting Roaches' contributions to UW Athletics; the original memorial to Wyoming's World War II veterans; as well as the addition of an area for the Wyoming High School Coaches' Hall of Fame. The renovated facility will be utilized for a number of UW Athletic Department events, including pregame hospitalities for both football and basketball.
Roach served in numerous roles through his years at Wyoming. He originally came to Wyoming as an assistant football coach in the 1960s, returned as Executive Director of the Cowboy Joe Club in 1985, served as head football coach from 1987-90 and was Athletics Director from 1986-95. During all of those times, Wyoming enjoyed great success. Roach was part of six of Wyoming's 11 bowl games and six of Wyoming's seven Western Athletic Conference football championships.
"Paul has given us incredible memories," said current UW Athletics Director Tom Burman. "He has touched so many individual lives and enriched the tradition of Wyoming Athletics. It is fitting that we repay him for his years of commitment to UW by creating a first-class venue in his honor.
"It is a tribute to Paul that so many former players and coaches have expressed interest in this project. We are very appreciative of those who have already contributed to this special fund drive, and we look forward to completing the fund-raising portion of the project so that we may move forward with construction."
