LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Player of the Century
Jerry Hill's football accomplishments certainly make for an impressive list. But the most impressive item on that list? Not such an easy thing to decide.
Can it be that in just three seasons, Hill's teams won 25 games, including a 1958 Sun Bowl win over Hardin-Simmons? In that span, UW defeated Utah, BYU and Colorado State each season. From 1958-60, the Cowboys won three Skyline Conference titles. Hill led Wyoming in total offense, scoring and rushing in 1959 and 1960. He was a two-time All-American in 1959 and 1960, totaling 1,374 rushing yards on 288 carries.
Can it be that the Lingle, Wyo., native had a successful eight-year pro career with the Baltimore Colts, amassing 2,668 career yards? He was a teammate of NFL Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas and played in one of the most memorable Super Bowls ever. In Super Bowl III, the heavily favored Colts were stunned by the upstart New York Jets, 16-7, in what many have called the biggest upsets in modern sports.
Was it the fact that he was named Wyoming Football's "Player of the Century" in a UW fan vote in 1992? Or that he was a Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 1993?
Simply put, Hill is one of the most iconic UW players ever.
