Those All-American Boys

The 1990s cast of Cowboys featured two stellar defensive players, both on and off the field.

Mitch Donahue was a rare talent at defensive end for the Cowboy defense. He played in 50 games from 1987-90, earning First Team All-WAC honors three times in his career. He was on the WAC All-Decade team, and was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in both 1989 and 1990. He was part of two WAC championship teams. For his career, he had 49 sacks (No. 1 in UW history) and 248 tackles. He was inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

Brian Lee was one of the most successful student-athletes to don the Brown and Gold. He was a fine football player, tallying 17 career interceptions, and eight in 1997 to earn Consensus All-America honors. But he also dedicated himself to schoolwork, earning First Team Academic All-America honors in the same season. He is the only player in Cowboy football history to earn both honors in the same season. He accomplished that rarest of honors in his senior season, when he also earned First Team All-America honors from Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America, the Walter Camp Football Foundation and Football News.

From 1994-97, Lee set new University of Wyoming career, single-season and single-game interception records as a safety. As a junior in 1996, he intercepted eight passes to rank No. 2 in the nation in interceptions. In his senior season of 1997, he again intercepted eight passes, which ranked him No. 1 in the NCAA that season. Lee and his fellow Cowboy defenders set a new school record in `97 by intercepting a combined 24 passes as a team. The UW secondary also ranked No. 6 in the NCAA in pass defense in 1997. He was a Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 2008.

About the #120CowboyTough Countdown

The 2013 season will mark the 120th anniversary of Wyoming Cowboy Football. To commemorate that anniversary, we will be counting down some of the great memories and moments from Wyoming football history over the next eight weeks leading up to the Cowboys' season opener at Nebraska on Aug. 31.

The 2013 "Countdown to Kickoff" will take Wyoming fans through Cowboy Football history chronologically. The first week will highlight some of the memorable moments from the period from the first season in 1893 through the 1940s. Then each successive week, the countdown will recall great moments from the 1950s, `60s, 70s, 80, 90s, 2000s and the current decade.

Our countdown will only touch on some of the greatest moments, but we encourage you, the Wyoming fans, to share your favorite memories through the official University of Wyoming Athletics Twitter (@wyoathletics) and Facebook pages (Wyoming Cowboys). Fans are encouraged to use #120CowboyTough when sharing their memories.

Enjoy the countdown, and we look forward to seeing you in War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7 for the home opener versus the Idaho Vandals.
