Grounding the Falcons

In recent seasons, Wyoming and Air Force have had some epic battles on the gridiron. Among the notable contests was 2002, a year Wyoming finished with a 2-10 mark. But one of those wins that season came over a powerful Falcons team.

A lot of things were going against Wyoming on Oct. 26, 2002. UW was 1-6 heading into the contest, while Air Force was ranked 22nd in the nation and averaged 306 yards rushing per game. The Falcons came into War Memorial with a 6-1 mark, with only a narrow loss to seventh-ranked Notre Dame.

But that day, UW played its best game of the year in a 34-26 victory. Air Force, averaging 37 points per game, was held to 11 points less than their season average. The Poke defense gave up just 255 rush yards, aided by linebacker Tyler Gottschalk with 12 tackles and Nate Young with 10. The UW offense also had an efficient day. QB Casey Bramlet went 32-for-43 for 387 yards and two TDs. Wideout Scottie Vines had seven grabs for 85 yards and a score and Malcom Floyd had six catches for 92 yards and one TD.

The Cowboys went into halftime with a 17-6 lead, and added 17 more points in the second half. Air Force tacked on a field goal with 43 seconds remaining to trail 34-26, but the Cowboys recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Interestingly enough, the other UW win of the season came over The Citadel, another military institution, based in South Carolina.

Then each successive week, the countdown will recall great moments from the 1950s, `60s, 70s, 80, 90s, 2000s and the current decade.

Our countdown will only touch on some of the greatest moments, but we encourage you, the Wyoming fans, to share your favorite memories through the official University of Wyoming Athletics Twitter (@wyoathletics) and Facebook pages (Wyoming Cowboys).
