Cowboys Compete in First Major Scrimmage of Fall Camp

Aug. 19, 2001

In their first major scrimmage of fall camp Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium, Wyoming head football coach Vic Koenning was given an early assessment of the teams progress through the first few days of practice.

"I'm glad we still have two weeks until our first game," Koenning said. "It was amazing to watch the scrimmage today because we've had such great enthusiasm and fire and emotion through early camp and it was almost like the team was tight today as if it was our first game. I didn't feel like the emotion was as strong today as it has been in practice up to this point."

Wyoming's offense produced three touchdowns in the over 90 play scrimmage with two coming threw the air and one rushing. Sophomore quarterback Casey Bramlet led the Pokes to their longest scoring play of the day with a 14 yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Leonard Jones. For the day Bramlet went seven of 16 for 101 yards and one touchdown.

Bramlet's younger brother Corey also passed for a touchdown hooking up with Antwan Floyd on a seven yard scoring play. Corey Bramlet passed for 108 yards completing nine of 13 attempts. Freshman Matt Belshe went two of four for 25 yards and redshirt freshman J.J. Raterink did not complete a pass but did throw one interception. Senior quarterback Matt Swanson did not play in the scrimmage.

"There were probably between the offense and defense 10 to 12 starters that we held out for various reasons. Having guys like Nate Scott and Derek Armah and Malcolm Floyd out definitely didn't help our first teams timing on offense but it was nice to get a look at some of our younger players on both sides of the ball." Koenning said.

Redshirt freshman Kit Bradshaw II had the Cowboys' longest run from scrimmage with a 42 yard scamper. Bradshaw led all running backs with 70 yards on nine carries. Freshman Kevin Fulton was the second leading rusher with 39 yards on six carries. Fulton scored a touchdown on a five yard run.

At the receiving end sophomore Ryan McGuffey caught three balls for 57 yards including a 36 yard catch from Casey Bramlet. Junior Scottie Vines came up with three catches for 47 yards, Lewis James III had 48 yards on three receptions and sophomore Leonard James had two receptions for 29 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball sophomore Jacque Finn led the team with five tackles and had one interception. Juniors Josh Rollins and Jon Aimone each had two sacks and freshman Herb Jones Jr. made three tackles and one sack.

"We still need to get sharper in many areas. We are still making mental mistakes that hurt us today but they are all correctable. There were a ton of great things today and a lot of lessons to be learned. We'll now go back and look at some film and see how much we improve when we scrimmage again on Wednesday." Koenning said.
