LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Success Versus The BCS
Wyoming has always been known to schedule some of the nation's top teams. It's beneficial for the Cowboys to play against the best, and the fans love seeing top-tier programs against UW. Since 2004, Wyoming has not only played against some of the best, but found success against teams from BCS conferences.
The trend began under head coach Joe Glenn in 2004 against Ole Miss of the powerful SEC, when UW upset the Rebels 37-32 in Laramie. Later that season, UW took on UCLA of the Pac-12 in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl, when the Pokes upended the Bruins 24-21.
The very next season, UW again overcame Ole Miss, 24-14, in Oxford, Miss. Two seasons later, the Pokes toppled Virginia of the ACC by the score of 23-3 in Laramie in the 2007 season opener.
The most recent win over a BCS opponent came in the 2008 campaign, when UW head coach Joe Glenn led UW to an upset victory over Tennessee in Knoxville, 13-7. Interceptions by Mike Neuhaus for 55 yards and Ward Dobbs for 24 yards and a touchdown in the first half powered UW to the victory.
In 2009, Wyoming hosted Texas, ranked second in the nation. UW held a 10-6 lead late in the first half, but eventually fell to the Longhorns, which finished as the BCS runner-up.
Over the last 16 seasons, Wyoming has played several top-25 programs, including Ohio State (1997), Colorado (1997), Georgia (1998), Tennessee (1999, 2002 and 2008), Auburn (2000), Texas A&M (2000, 2001 and 2004), Kansas (2001 and 2003), Washington (2002), Oklahoma State (2003), Ole Miss (2004 and 2005), Florida (2005), Virginia (2006 and 2007), Texas (2009 and 2010) and Nebraska in 2011. The Cowboys have home games scheduled with Oregon (2017), Missouri in 2018 and Washington State in 2018.
