Laramie, Wyo. -- University of Wyoming head football coachDana Dimel announced today the hiring of Dave Warner as the Cowboys' newquarterback coach. A former quarterback, himself, at SyracuseUniversity from 1978-81, Warner coached the quarterbacks at BucknellUniversity during the 1997 season. Bucknell posted a 10-1 season in'97. Prior to coaching at Bucknell, he was the quarterback coach at theUniversity of Kansas from 1988-96. Warner's hiring is subject to UWBoard of Trustee approval.
"I am very pleased that we were able to add Dave (Warner) to ourcoaching staff," said Wyoming head coach Dana Dimel. "I coached againstDave for nine seasons when he was at KU and I was at Kansas State. Iwas always impressed with how well prepared the KU quarterbacks werewhen we faced them.
"Dave and I also recruited the same area of the country (Texas)while we were at KU and K-State, and I have a great deal of respect forhim as a recruiter.
"He is very excited to be coming to Wyoming. I know he will have agreat influence on our players, and he will fit in very well with ourcoahing staff."
Warner will be entering his 16th season as a college coach in '98.During his nine-year coaching stint at Kansas, the Jayhawks appeared intwo bowl games -- the 1992 and '95 Aloha Bowls in Honolulu, Hawai'i.Prior to his years at KU, Warner coached the quarterbacks at Kent Statefor four seasons from 1984-87. He began his college-coaching career asa graduate assistant at his alma mater, Syracuse, in 1983.
"I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach for Dana (Dimel)and the Wyoming program," said Warner. "I know the great traditionWyoming Football has built through the years, and I look forward tojoining such a tradition-rich program.
"I'm anxious to get started, and I'm very excited about working withthe talented quarterbacks we have on this yearis team."
Warner holds a bacheloris degree in speech communication and amaster's degree in physical education both from Syracuse. Warner is 38years old (birthdate May 10, 1960). He has one daughter, Alexandra, ageeight.
Dimel also announced that the following organizational changes willbe made in the Cowboy coaching staff for the 1998 season. Dimel willassume the offensive coordinator duties, while Warner will be both thequarterback coach and passing-game coordinator. Current UW offensiveline coach Clancy Barone will assume the added duty of running-gamecoordinator.
Warner replaces Todd Whitten as UWis quarterback coach. Whittenresigned from the Cowboy staff on Aug. 3, 1998, to enter privatebusiness.
