Sept. 28, 2006
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
For the second time this season, the Wyoming Cowboys will head to the east coast to play an opponent they have never met on the football field. This coming Saturday, the Cowboys will play the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., in a game scheduled to kickoff at 11:30 a.m., Mountain Time (1:30 p.m., Eastern Time).
While there is no traditional television coverage of this week's game, it will be available via computer on ESPN 360's pay service to fans who have a broadband connection and whose Internet Service Provider (ISP) subscribes to ESPN 360.
Earlier this season, Wyoming traveled to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Virginia Cavaliers in another first-time meeting. Wyoming will enter Saturday's game with a 1-3 overall record, 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference. Syracuse is 2-2 on the season, 0-0 in the Big East Conference.
After opening the 2006 season with a dominating 38-7 home victory over Utah State, the Pokes have lost three consecutive close games. UW's three losses have come by one point in overtime (12-13) at Virginia, seven points (10-17) at home to current No. 22 ranked Boise State and seven (24-31) at home to Mountain West Conference rival Air Force. That is three losses by 15 total points or an average deficit of only 5.0 points per game.
Syracuse began the '06 campaign 0-2, losing at Wake Forest, by a score of 10-20, and at home to current No. 13 ranked Iowa in two overtimes, by the score of 13-20. The Orange has bounced back to win its two most recent games at Illinois (31-21) and at home against Miami of Ohio (34-14).
Not only is Wyoming playing Syracuse for the first time, but it will be only the second current Big East opponent that the Cowboys have faced. Louisville is the only other current Big East opponent that the Cowboys have played. UW holds a 3-1 overall series advantage against Louisville.
For Syracuse, the meeting with Wyoming will be the third against a Mountain West Conference member institution. SU has a 1-1 record versus BYU and an 0-1 record against TCU.
The Wyoming Cowboy Football team will be playing in a domed stadium for the first time in 19 seasons when it plays in the Carrier Dome this Saturday.
The last time the Pokes played in a domed stadium was Nov. 12, 1988, when UW traveled to Houston, Texas, to play the University of Houston in the Astrodome. Houston won that game by a score of 34-10.
The Cowboys actually played in the Astrodome four times -- all in regular-season games against the University of Houston Cougars in 1969, 1970, 1973 and 1988.
Syracuse has been playing in the Carrier Dome since it opened on Sept. 20, 1980. It is home to Syracuse Football, men's basketball, and men's and women's lacrosse.
The Carrier Dome is the largest on-campus indoor arena in the United States. It seats 49,262 for football. Seating is divided as follow: 18,404 on the lower level; 5,901 on the mezzanine; and 24,142 on the upper level. There are also 38 private boxes that seat a total of 912. For basketball, seating is 33,000. The football playing surface in the Carrier Dome is FieldTurfPro that was installed prior to the start of the 2005 season.
As with all Cowboy Football games, Saturday's contest will be broadcast on radio over the Cowboy Sports Network. The radio broadcast of this week's game will begin at 10:30 a.m., Mountain Time.
