Jack Hawley (SDSU), Matt Lehning (Wyoming) and Tom Waring (Wyoming) were named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for their performances on the football field last week. Lehning and Waring earned the honors after Wyoming?s 10-7 victory over 25th-ranked Air Force on Saturday at Falcon Stadium. Jack Hawley led the Aztecs to their first road victory of the season in three games against BCS-affiliated opponents as San Diego State routed Kansas 41-13.
Jack Hawley, SDSU, QB, Junior (MWC Offensive Player of the Week) - In only his second collegiate start in as many weeks, Jack Hawley completed 19-of-24 pass attempts for 343 yards and three touchdowns in the Aztecs? 41-13 rout of host Kansas. Hawley was nearly flawless in the first half as he led San Diego State on first-half scoring drives of 80, 80, 94 and 85 yards. The junior-college transfer completed 16-of-19 passes for 331 yards and three scores in the first half alone as the Aztecs jumped to a 31-0 halftime lead. The Aztecs are 2-2 and host Air Force on Saturday, Oct.2 at 6 p.m. (espn2).
Matt Lehning, Wyoming, FS, Senior (MWC Defensive Player of the Week) - Matt Lehning had 13 tackles and a key interception in Wyoming?s 10-7 victory over 25th-ranked Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Sublette, Kan., native, also recorded a tackle for loss as the Cowboys defeated the Falcons for the first time since 1996. Air Force entered the game second in the nation in rushing offense with 362.5 yards per game, but failed to reach that mark with 285 yards on the ground. Lehning intercepted the Falcons? Cale Bonds with less than nine minutes to play in the game. Wyoming (2-1, 1-0 MWC) hosts the University of Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
Tom Waring, Wyoming, Punter, Junior (MWC Special Teams Player of the Week) - Tom Waring punted six times for a 47.2 average, including a 62-yarder, in Wyoming?s 10-7 victory over the 25th-ranked Air Force Falcons. Three of Waring?s punts were either downed or landed inside the Air Force 20-yard line including one inside the 10-yard line. Waring?s efforts contributed to the Falcons? average starting field position at their own 24-yard line. Waring is currently 10th in the nation in punting with a 44.5 average. Wyoming (2-1, 1-0 MWC) hosts the University of Idaho on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
