LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming freshman quarterback Brett Smith received another weekly honor Wednesday when it was announced he was named the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Mountain West Player of the Week.
Smith, a true freshman, completed 25 of 36 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns and added 24 rushing yards and two more touchdowns in Wyoming's 30-27 win over San Diego State on Saturday.
As a part of its 20th year celebration, the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas is beginning a new tradition by conducting weekly Facebook player of the week polls, driven by fan votes, recognizing exemplary on-field play within the two Bowl affiliated conferences, the Pac-12 and Mountain West. The Pac-12 Player of the Week was De'Anthony Thomas, a running back from the University of Oregon. Thomas had 262 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 93-yard kickoff return for a score, in win Oregon's 43-28 win over Washington State.
"Every week we see significantly more fans voting in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Player of the Week Facebook polls," Tina Kunzer-Murphy, MAACO Bowl Las Vegas executive director, said. "This week both Wyoming and Oregon fans came out in force for their respective Player of the Week candidates, making Brett Smith and De'Anthony Thomas the Bowl's respective Mountain West and Pac-12 player of the week honorees."
Each week, players from both the Pac-12 and Mountain West conferences will be selected for nomination and then voted. College football fans and Monday morning quarterbacks are welcome to cast their vote for Player of the Week by clicking here.
