LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming senior safety Luke Ruff was named on Thursday to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Football First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is the third consecutive year that Ruff has earned First Team Academic All-District 7 honors. The native of Castle Rock, Colo., Ruff has achieved a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average in civil engineering.
Student-athletes who earn First Team Academic All-District honors advance on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The Capital One Academic All-America Football Team will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Ruff had started all five games this season before suffering an injury versus Nevada. He was a 2012 Preseason First Team All-Mountain West Conference selection by conference media members. In his five games this season, Ruff has been credited with 34 total tackles - 26 solo tackles and eight assists, and he has 2.5 tackles for loss.
His junior season, Ruff was also a Capital One First Team Academic All-District selection. He earned Second Team All-Mountain West honors in 2011, recording 102 tackles. He ranked No. 6 in the MW and No. 88 in the nation in tackles last year, averaging 7.8 tackles per game.
As a sophomore in 2010, Ruff was named First Team Academic All-District 7.
He has earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors and MW Scholar-Athlete honors each of the past three seasons, and will qualify for those honors again this season.
To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.00 scale, must be a starter or significant contributor to his team, must be in his sophomore season athletically and must have completed at least one full academic year at his current institution.
CoSIDA selects Academic Teams in 12 sport programs. District 7 consists of the states of: Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
