LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming junior strong safety Luke Ruff was named on Thursday to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Football First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is the second consecutive year that Ruff has earned First Team Academic All-District 7 honors. The native of Castle Rock, Colo., Ruff has achieved a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average in civil engineering.
Student-athletes who earn First Team Academic All-District honors advance on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The Capital One Academic All-America Football Team will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Ruff has started all eight games at strong safety for the Cowboys this season. He leads the team in tackles, with 65, and ranks fourth in the Mountain West Conference and 70th in the nation in tackles, averaging 8.1 tackles per game. The junior has also recovered one fumble, forced one fumble and broken up two passes this season.
As a sophomore in 2010, Ruff was named First Team Academic All-District 7. He earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference honors and MW Scholar-Athlete honors as both a freshman and a sophomore.
To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.00 scale, must be a starter or significant contributor to his team, must be in his sophomore season athletically and must have completed at least one full academic year at his current institution.
CoSIDA selects Academic Teams in 12 sport programs. District 7 consists of the states of: Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas.
