Four Cowboy Football Players Earn Academic Honors

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Four University of Wyoming footballplayers were named to the GTE Academic All-District VII football team onThursday. Leading the way was senior noseguard Jason Dreessen (Fort Morgan,Colo.), who was named to the First Team. Cornerback Trent Gamble (Parker,Colo.), who is currently in graduate school at UW, junior place-kicker AaronElling (Lander, Wyo.) and junior quarterback Jay Stoner (Colorado Springs,Colo.) were each named to the Second Team.

GTE sponsors the annual academic teams. Voting is conducted by theCollege Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Those individualsselected to the All-District First Teams automatically qualify for thenational ballot. The country is divided into eight districts. The state ofWyoming is in District VII along with the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas,Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, as well as theprovinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada.

Dreessen, who has achieved a 3.59 cumulative grade-point average ineducation, will be the one Cowboy who will advance to the national ballot.The Academic All-America team will be announced in early December.

        Wyoming's Second Team selections and their majors are: Trent Gamble    Graduate Student  3.30 gpa in finance Aaron Elling    Junior            3.42 gpa in exercise physiology Jay Stoner      Junior            3.52 gpa in computer science

Wyoming has had a First Team Academic All-American for each of thelast five years. UW's most recent Academic All-American was linebackerBrian Brown in 1998.
