Six Cowboy Football Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District VII Honors

Nov. 13, 2006

The Wyoming Cowboy Football program had six individuals achieve ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII honors this past week as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). That was the most by any university in CoSIDA's District VII.

Three Cowboys earned First Team Academic All-Distirct VII led by senior defensive lineman Mike Groover, who earned First Team honors for the second consecutive year. Joining Groover on the first team were fellow senior strong safety John Wendling and sophomore tight end Chris Sundberg. Wendling was a Second Team selection a year ago. For Sundberg, it was his first Academic All-District honor. By earning First Team Academic All-District honors, all three advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The Academic All-America Football team will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Three other Wyoming Cowboys earned Second Team Academic All-District VII including junior linebacker Luke Chase, junior linebacker Sean Claffey and senior wide receiver Tyler Holden. For Chase and Claffey it was the second consecutive year they were voted to the Second Team. It was Holden's first Academic All-District award.

After Wyoming's District high six honorees came Montana (five individuals honored), Drake (4), Iowa (4) and Nebraska (4).
