LARAMIE, Wyo. - Toys for Tots, a program begun by the Marine Corps Reserve in 1947 to collect new, unwrapped toys and distribute those toys to needy children, will hold a collection event this Saturday at the University of Wyoming versus University of New Mexico football game. Cash donations will also be accepted. Cash donations are utilized to purchase additonal toys for distribution to children. All the donations will remain in Albany County. Saturday's game kicks off at noon. Parking lots open at 8 a.m. and gates to the stadium open at 10 a.m.
The U.S. Marine Corps League Laramie Detachment 777 and the University of Wyoming Student-Athlete Adivsory Committee (SAAC) will join together on Saturday to coordinate collection of toys prior to the Wyoming Football game.
Fans may donate either new, unwrapped toys or make a donation by cash or check at collection points around War Memorial Stadium. There will be collection points at Gates 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8. Active duty and past members of the U.S. Marine Corps, along with over 50 UW student-athletes will be at those designated gates to accept donations. Those volunteers will also be present in Tailgate Park and in Cowboy Joe Club donor parking lots on Saturday to help any fans who wish to donate.
"This Toys for Tots collection event is one of our key collection events in Laramie each year," said Charlie Hogelin, Chairman of the Toys for Tot Committee of the Marine Corps League Laramie Detachment 777. "The support of the Athletics Department and its student-athletes through this event helps us meet the needs of children throughout Albany County at Christmas.
"We've worked together with the UW SAAC several years, and the coordination of this event has helped us increase donations each year. We hope Cowboy fans will join with us in helping make a special Christmas for needy children throughout our community."
