LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming Athletics Director Lee Moon announced Monday that Vic Koenning has been terminated as Cowboy head football coach effective at the end of the season.
Koenning had two more years remaining on his contract, and Moon said the terms of that contract would be honored. His base salary was $105,204 per year. With one more game left this season at New Mexico on Nov. 30, Koenning's career record is 5-28, 1-19 in Mountain West Conference play.
"We believe that it is in the best interest of our program that we make a change at this time," Moon said. "No one would ever queston Vic's dedication, and his work ethic. Unfortunately, sometimes those attributes do not necessarily translate into success.
"The Cowboys had just one quality win (Air Force) in three seasons," Moon continued. "The success of any program, ultimately, is measured by wins and losses. The University of Wyoming football program needed a change in leadership.
"We will hire a quality coach as soon possible, and bring Cowboy football back to where we all expect it to be."
Koenning, 42 (Feb. 26, 1960), became Wyoming's 29th head football coach on Dec. 13, 1999.
"I am appreciative for the opportunity to be a head coach, and to impact our young men in a positive way," Koenning. "Coaching staff members who were here for our three seasons know of the tremendous strides we made in the development of this team scholastically and athletically. Unfortunately, we couldn't get enough wins on the field to demonstrate that progress. This program will be successful with the character and courage that we feel like we've helped to instill in these young men.
"I am very much at peace knowing I worked my hardest, did my best, and gave this my all. My only regret is not getting to see the fruits of our labors. I very much appreciate the support of the great fans and followers of Cowboy football. After six years here, being a Cowboy is in my blood. I will make no further comment"
Koenning had been Wyoming's defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach for three seasons prior to being named head coach. He came to Wyoming from the University of Memphis where he served as the defensive secondary coach for six seasons (1991-96).
A 1983 graduate of Kansas State University, Koenning was a three-year starter at linebacker for the Wildcats, and served as captain of K-State's Independence Bowl team in 1982.
