LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming senior linebacker Brian Brown from Columbus, Mont., was named to the GTE First Team Academic All-America team on Thursday. Brown has achieved a 3.84 grade point average in finance. A year ago, Brown earned Second Team Academic All-America honors, and he is a three-time Western Athletic Conference All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete selection. He also was a 1998 Second Team All-WAC Mountain Division honoree.

Brown continues the tradition of Academic All-Americans from the University of Wyoming. With Browns selection, the Wyoming Football program has now had a First Team Academic All-American in the last five consecutive years.

A transfer from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., Brown has been a three-year starter for the Cowboys at linebacker. He ended his career ranked No. 7 on the UW career tackle list with 303. During his career, Brown helped lead the Cowboys to a 26-10 (.722) record in three seasons, was a team captain on a 1998 squad that was ranked as high as No. 25 in the nation and was an integral part of the 1996 Cowboy squad that won the inaugural WAC Pacific Division title and ended the season ranked No. 22 in both national polls.

Over the past five years, the Wyoming Football program has had at least one GTE First Team Academic All-American each season, and has had a total of eight First Team selections.

The past two years, 1996 and 97, Wyoming Football has led the nation in First Team honorees with two First Team selections in 1996 and three in 1997.
