OREM, Utah - University of Wyoming 125-pound senior Tyler Cox was named Monday as the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat this weekend.
Cox, who hails from Gillette, Wyo., capped off a great weekend by winning the Reno Tournament of Champions title on Sunday at 125 pounds. The senior went 5-0 for the day, including one pin in 56 seconds and one major decision. The top-seeded and ninth-ranked Cox made it to the championship bout and faced Stanford's Evan Silver, who was ranked 12th in the nation. He used an escape point and a second-period takedown to upend Silver, 3-1.
It was the third-consecutive RTOC title for Cox, who also won the event in 2012 and 2013 at 125 pounds. Now 12-1 on the season, including a 5-0 mark against ranked opponents, Cox has reeled off nine-straight victories. He now has 101 career wins, which ranks him 14th in UW history. His efforts helped propel Wyoming to the tournament team title on Sunday with 134 points, just the second time in program history that the Cowboys have won the event.
The conference honor is Cox's first of the season and third of his career. He is the second Cowboy to be honored this year by the league, joining sophomore Cole Mendenhall, who was the wrestler of the week for Dec. 1.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its ninth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
