LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming men's golf team wasfaced with two challenges this week in their first tournament of the 2001spring golf season. The first challenge was a long winter layoff thatdidn't allow the Cowboys to play outside until they arrived in Mississippifor the University of Southern Mississippi Beau Rivage Classic. The secondchallenge was a wrist injury to UW's top player, senior David Hearn, thatforced him to withdraw in the third round of the tournament. With thosecombined challenges, the Pokes finished 15th Tuesday in the field of 16teams.
"After the first two rounds on Monday, we were playing pretty solidgolf," said Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "But on Tuesday, thepain in David's (Hearn) wrist just wouldn't let him continue, and he wasforced to withdraw. The other guys struggled playing a consistent round, and in a field of quality teams like we faced this week you can't make manymistakes and hope to place high."
The Cowboys shot a 54-hole total of 935 to finish 15th. Sam HoustonState won the team competition at 889. Individually, Ryan Polzin of SamHouston State won the medalist honors with a three-round score of 212,four-under par.
Wyoming's highest finisher was freshman Mike Mezei. Mezei placed ina tie for 35th out of the 83 competitors. He shot a 54-hole total of 231,15-over par. Mezei played a steady three rounds, shooting five-over 77 ineach round. Senior Jake Hunter and sophomore Kurt Kowaluk tied for 44th at234. Junior Mike Urbatchka placed in a tie for 67th at 239.
"As with the first time out each spring, we knew coming into thistournament that our games wouldn't be as sharp as some of the warmer-weatherschools -- simply because we haven't had the opportunity to get outside,"added Prenzlow. "But we now have to refocus and begin preparing for theHawai'i tournament."
Wyoming's next tournament is Feb. 21-23 at the University of Hawai'iJohn Burns Invitational.
Southern Mississippi's Beau Rivage Classic was played at theWindance Country Club course in Gulfport, Miss. The course measured 6,660yards and played to a par of 72.
