The University of Wyoming men's golf team sits in third place after the first day of the Arizona National Invitational Tournament with a 282 (-6) on the Omni Tucson National - Catalina Course in Tucson, Ariz. Sophomore Drew McCullough leads the Pokes with a 69 (-3) and is tied for fifth. This is the second consecutive tournament that he has led Wyoming after day one. Last year the Cowboys shot a 310 (+22) to end the first day at the Arizona NIT.

"We had a really good consistent start," UW head coach Joe Jensen said. "This is a really good event and we have two more days. We have to be competitive in fields like this if we want to take the next step as a program. Overall, I am very pleased after the first day."

Junior Ryan Wallen and sophomores Quintin Pope and Arron Lickteig also played well as they each carded a 71 (-1) and are tied 19th. Senior Kamrin Allen followed as he shot a 72 (E) to end his day tied for 29th. Sophomore Glenn Workman is competing as an individual and also shot a 71 (-1) to tie for 19th.

The Cowboys are the only squad in the in the 14-team field that does not have a single player above par.

"The guys are working hard and playing with confidence," Jensen added. "We are playing solid golf and we just need to keep taking it one round at a time."

Nevada and Santa Clara are tied for the lead after the first round with a 278 (-10), only four strokes ahead of the Pokes. Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh is leading the individual race carding a 62 (-10).

The Cowboys return tomorrow morning with an 18-hole round starting at 8 a.m. MT.
