In its secondbest performance of the 1998-99 golf season, the University of Wyoming mens'golf team placed eighth out of 20 teams at the UC-Santa Barbara PacificCoast Intercollegiate on Friday, March 5. Wyoming shot a 54-hole total of888 to capture eighth. UW freshman Mike Urbatchka (Sheridan, Wyo.) shot afinal round 73, and Cowboy sophomore David Hearn (Brantford, Ontario) shot afinal round of 74 to tie for 22nd place in the field of 106 golfers.Urbatchka and Hearn finished with six-over par scores of 222.
California won the team competition with a three-round score of 865.John Lepak of Oregon State won the individualist medalist honors, shooting a209 in the 54-hole event.
"I can't say enough about how the guys played this week," said UWmen's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "We really had a consistent effort fromeveryone this week. Mike (Urbatchka) and David (Hearn) both played strongfinal rounds. Jake (Hunter), who was leading us on Thursday, struggled withhis putting a little bit in the final 18 holes, but he had an excellenttournament, as well. Jake and Kurt Kowaluk both shot 223's, and ended upjust one stroke back of David and Mike. Kurt really stepped up big thisweek for a freshman. Kevin Kayden also contributed with a solid 76 onFriday that helped make the difference for us in finishing eighth.
"We played very favorably against a number of West Coast schools whowill be challenging for spots in the NCAA Tournament. I think the guys feelgood about the consistency they played with this week, and with this finishthey know that they are capable of playing with the top teams."
This year's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate was the 25th annual. Thetournament was played on Thursday and Friday, March 4-5 at the SandpiperGolf Course overlooking the Pacific Ocean north of Santa Barbara, Calif.The course measured 7,068 yards and played to a par of 72.
