LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboy golf team shot their lowest round of the tournament in Tuesday's final round at the University of San Diego Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to finish in a tie for 10th place. Wyoming shot a 23-over par round of 311 on Tuesday, and tied Western Kentucky for 10th, with a 54-hole total of 956.
UW senior Kurt Kowaluk was Wyoming's highest individual finisher, tying for 36th. Kowaluk shot a 22-over par score of 238 over three rounds. He finished one stroke better than Cowboy sophomore Dan Silva, who tied for 39th at 23-over par 239.
Utah won the team championship, shooting a tournament low round of three-under par 285 on Tuesday to move up from fourth place to capture the team title with a final three-round score of 909. The Utes started the day seven strokes back of Portland and Rice, which shared the lead after Monday's opening 36 holes.
Mike McCabe of Portland won individual medalist honors, finishing with a one-over par total of 217. He won by six strokes over second place Scott Philips of Rice.
"The guys did a good job of putting a nice final round together on Tuesday," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "All four of our individual scores that counted toward Tuesday's team score were in the 70s. The weather in Monday's first two rounds was difficult with rain and high winds, and the scores for all the teams showed how difficult the conditions were.
"Kurt (Kowaluk) was in the Top 25 heading into Tuesday's final round, but he slipped back a little, shooting a final round 81. Dan Silva had a nice tournament. He played consistent throughout the three rounds, and finished up with a 78 -- his best round of the week. Jason Aichele also played consistently over the two days, and Matthew Brunk and Niel King both shot rounds of 77 on Tuesday for the lowest two rounds for us in the tournament.
"We didn't finish where we wanted to, but the guys are still trying to get back into playing competitive golf after not being able to get outside all winter. I saw improvement in the final round. We have three more spring tournaments to continue to improve before the Mountain West Championship in early May."
The University of San Diego Invitational was played on Monday and Tuesday, March 17-18 at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The course measured 6,950 yards and played to a par of 72.
Wyoming will return to tournament action on March 31-April 1 at the University of California-Santa Barbara Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Santa Barbara, Calif.
