LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team began its 2004 spring season on Friday with the first two rounds of the 2004 Steve Kerr Invitational, being hosted by the University of Denver.
Wyoming is tied for 11th place with Princeton after the first 36 holes, with a two-round score of 605. Colorado State leads the 14-team field, firing a first-day total of 575.
Individually for Wyoming, senior Jason Aichele and freshman Jeff Franks lead the way with identical eight-over par scores of 150, and are tied for 29th in the field of 88 competitors. Dan Floyd of UTEP carries a one-stroke lead over Barrett Jarosch of Denver into Saturday's final 18-hole round. Floyd posted a six-under par total of 136, while Jarosch shot a five-under par 137 through the first two rounds. The only other player to shoot under par through the first two rounds was Martin Laird of Colorado State, who fired a three-under par total of 139.
"Jason (Aichele) and Jeff (Franks) both had nice days," said third-year Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "They are both at eight-over par with a round left to play on Saturday -- only five strokes out of the Top 10.
"We really had nice balance today, with four players within three strokes of one another. Matthew Brunk and Jonathan Shuss are right behind them at 10 over and 11 over.
"For our first competition of the spring, I liked the way we competed today. We are in a group of 10 teams within 13 strokes of one another, so we have an opportunity to make a move tomorrow with a strong finish."
This year's Steve Kerr Invitational is being played at the Sundance Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz. The course measures 6,883 yards and plays to a par of 71.
Saturday's final round is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m., Mountain time with a shotgun start.
