Cowboys 12th after First Day of Oregon Duck Invite

The University of Wyoming men’s golf team opened play at the Duck Invitational on Monday morning in Eugene, Ore. The Pokes shot a first round score of 304 (+16) and carded a 296 (+8) in the afternoon to finish the opening day of the 54-hole tournament in 12th place in the 16-team field with a tally of 600 (+24). Sophomore Kamrin Allen had a couple of his best rounds of the spring to start the tournament off, which is being held at the par-72, 7-165-yard Emerald Valley Golf Course. Allen had four birdies and fired a 73 (+1) during the first round, he then added four more birdies in the second round for a score of 72 (E) and sits tied for sixth place of the 88-man field with a 145 (+1).

“We’re playing a little better and most importantly we are being competitive,” Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. “We had really good play from plenty of our guys today but this is a tough course. We know there is still work that needs to be done.”

Senior Brent Baylon was steady in both rounds on Monday, as he shot a 70 (-2) in the morning and a 75 (+3) in the afternoon to put him tied for sixth with 145 (+1). Senior Eddie Stewart carded a 79 (+7) in the first round with a 73 (+1) in the afternoon, to put him in a tie for 55th with 152 (+8). Freshman Ryan Wallen, not playing as an individual for the first time this year, recorded a first round score of 82 (+10), and a 76 (+4) during the second round. 

Senior Eric Parish shot an 85 (+13) in the first round and finished the day with a 76 (+4) after the lunch break. Playing as an individual, junior Cameron Lindell shot a two-round total of 157 (+13) on Monday and is tied for 76th.

After the first two rounds, Byron Meth of Pacific has a one-stroke lead over Minnesota’s Jose Mendez. Meth fired a 141 (-3), while Mendez carded a 142 (-2).  Sulman Raza of Oregon is sitting third with 143 (-1). Oregon State is currently the team leader with a 582 (+6), with Oregon two-shots behind for second place.

“We need a little more consistency,” Jensen said.  “We had a great week of practice and we have an opportunity to go out and play well tomorrow. The guys have to get their mind right and come out with a positive attitude for tomorrow so we can finish strong.”
