The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team completed their first two rounds of the San Diego State/Barona Collegiate Cup, on Thursday in San Diego, with the team sitting in 15th-place of 16 teams. Sophomore Clinton Boutelle had the best day for the Cowboys shooting a season best 67 (-5) in the first round and a 76 (+4) for a total of 123 (-1), which put him in a tie for eighth-place. The Cowboys shot a 372 (+12) first round and 383 (+23) second round for a total of 755 (+35).
The Barona Collegiate Cup is a score five of six golfers event and is being held at the par-72, 7,374-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif.
"We were in good shape early in the day, but we finished poorly," Cowboy Golf head coach Joe Jensen said. "This is a really tightly bunch of teams we are sitting in and we are within just a few strokes of 9th-place."
The 'Pokes finished the first of two rounds today about 4 p.m. Mountain Time and began their second rounds immediately after. Boutelle led the way in the first round for the 'Pokes shooting a 67 (-5), which tied him for first place of the 100-man field. Gabe Maier shot the next best round of 72 (E), which tied him for 23rd-place. Junior Casey Ruff finished right behind Maier with a one-over 73, tying him for 28th-place. Zach Zaremba shot the Cowboys next best round of 77 (+5) that tied him for 75th-place after the first round. Michael May and Phil Henzlik both shot an 11-over 83 tying them for 98th-place. Wyoming shot a team total of 372 (+12) in the first round at sat in 13th-place.
The Cowboys could not hang on to their place and dropped in the second round. According to Jensen, his team did not play awful they "just did not have an anchor this afternoon." UW shot a 383 (+23) in the second round dropping them to 15th-place. Boutelle, UW's top finisher, shot a second round 76 (+4) giving him a two round total of 123 (-1) and put him in a tie for eighth-place. Maier sits in a tie for 38th-place (149, +5) after shooting a five-over 77 in the second round. Ruff shot a second round 79 (+7) that gave him a total of 152 (+8) and tied him for 59th-place. Zaremba shot a second round 76 (+4) and finished in a tie for 63rd with a two round total of 153 (+9). May shot the best second round for UW with a 75 (+3), giving him a two round total of 158 (+14), and tying him for 86th-place. Henzlik shot a second round 86 (+14) giving him a total of 169 (+25) and gave him 100th-place.
"We are going to give it our best tomorrow," Jensen added. "If we can get a good round in tomorrow we can maybe move up the leaderboard. Hopefully we can play well."
On top of the leaderboard in the team standings is San Diego with a two round total of 712 (-8). San Diego has a 10-stroke lead on the field with the closest being San Diego State with a total of 722 (+2).
The individual leader after the first two rounds is UC-Santa Barbara's Glen Scher with a two round total of 137 (-7). Nevada's Scott Smith sits a stroke behind Scher with a 136 (-6). Rounding out the top four are San Diego teammates Alex Ching and Manav Shah with a 139 (-5).
Wyoming will play its final round at the SDSU/Barona Collegiate Cup on Friday.
