Wyoming Places Ninth Against a Top National Field at the Oregon Duck Invitational

March 26, 2002

Playing against one of the top tournament fields in the country, the Wyoming Cowboy golf team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the University of Oregon Duck Invitational on Tuesday. UW finished with a 54-hole total of 890. Wyoming was led by senior Mike Urbatchka and junior Kurt Kowaluk, who both finished tied for 41st place with three-round totals of 222, six-over par.

"We showed definite improvement this week," said UW head coach Joe Jensen. "This was an outstanding field of teams, but the guys really stepped up and competed. Many of these teams will qualify for the NCAA Tournament, and it gave us a chance to see how we stacked up against them. We've had an opportunity to get outside several times since our opening spring tournament at UC Santa Barbara earlier this month and it showed. Everyone on the team played solid golf this week.

"Kurt (Kowaluk) put together a great day on Monday, shooting rounds of 72 and 70. I know he was disappointed with his final round of 80 on Tuesday, but he still had a really nice tournament. Mike Urbatchka and Mike Mezei both played excellent final rounds. Urbatchka was one-over par (73) on Tuesday, and Mezei shot even par (72).

"Our two freshmen also had nice tournaments. Jonathan Shuss had three consecutive rounds in the 70s, and Matthew Brunk improved every round. If we can get everyone playing well at the same time, we should be very competitive in the final three regular-season tournaments of the spring."

Kowaluk entered Tuesday's final round tied for ninth place at two-under par 142. He was only four strokes out of the lead before posting an 80 on Tuesday. Urbatchka on the other hand moved up six spots in the final round with his one-over par round of 73. Mezei made the biggest move of the day for Wyoming. His final round 72 vaulted him 19 spots, from a tie for 71st into a tie for 52nd in the field of 91 of the top men's golfers in the nation.

Three teams entered the tournament ranked among the Top 25 teams in the country. San Diego State was ranked No. 16, Washington State was No. 18 and Nevada entered as the No. 22 team in the nation.

Host Oregon captured the team title by one stroke over Washington State -- 849 to 850. Jon Reehoorn of Washington State took home individual honors, winning by two strokes over Scott Gordon of UC Davis -- 206 to 208.

The three-round event was played at the Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore. The course measured 6,738 yards and played to a par of 72.

Wyoming's next tournament will by on April 8-9 at the Wichita State Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan..
