SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowboy golf team began play at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invitational, on Monday in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Cowboys shot a two-round score of 601 (+25) and sit in 10th place of the 12-team field. Junior Clinton Boutelle led the way for the Pokes shooting a 149 (+5) to finish in a tie for 30th place of the 74-man field. Senior Casey Ruff, playing from individual spot also shot a 149 (+5) in the first two rounds.
"We got off to a pretty decent start in the first round, but just were not consistent enough to finish the day strong," Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen said. "It is tough when you start well, like we did and just cannot finish well. I know this team is close we just need to keep working hard and go play well tomorrow."
The Cowboys shot their best first round of the spring season in today's opening round shooting a 294 (+6). Leading the way in the first round was senior Mike May who shot an even-par 72. Playing as an individual, fellow senior Ruff also shot an even-par first round. Redshirt Freshman Jake Hedge shot a first round 73 (+1). Boutelle recorded the next-lowest first round for UW of 74 (+2). Sophomore Eddie Stewart shot a first round 75 (+3). Sophomore Eric Parish rounded out the Cowboy scoring with a four-over 76.
Wyoming could not duplicate its excellent first round shooting a second round 307 (+19) to finish with a two-round score of 601 (+25). Boutelle shot a second round 75 (+3) while, Ruff shot a 77 (+5) finishing them with the Cowboys best two-round score of 149 (+5) and tying them for 30th place. Parish was the next highest finisher tying for 35th place after shooting a second round 74 (+2) which gave him a total score of 150 (+6). May shot a second round 80 (+8) to finish him with a score of 152 (+8) which tied him for 45th place. Stewart finished one stroke behind May after shooting a 78 (+6) in the second round. He finished with a two-round score of 153 (+9) to tie him in 52nd place. Hedge rounded out the Cowboys scoring in the second round shooting an 82 (+10) to finish with a final tally of 155 (+11), tying him for 58th place.
The OGIO UCSB Invite is being played at the Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara, Calif., which measures 7,068 yards and plays a par 72.
The Cowboys will conclude the OGIO UCSB Invite, on Tuesday with one 18-hole round.
"We are going to go out tomorrow to try and make a move up the leaderboard," Jensen said. "This the first day of a nice road trip and we just need to improve each day."
