Senior Jake Hunter fired an openinground of one-over par 73 on Monday, and is tied for 11th place after thefirst round of the Campbell University Intercollegiate being played in BuiesCreek, N.C. The Wyoming Cowboys are in ninth place in the 12-team fieldwith a team score of 303.
The University of Denver leads in the team competition with anopening round 291. The team scores are grouped tightly together, withWyoming only 12 strokes back of the team lead. Four individuals are tiedfor the individual crown at one-under par 71.
"Jake (Hunter) played a very strong round today, with an openinground 73" said UW head golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "He's only two strokesout of the lead, and the way he is playing, Jake should have a real shot atthe individual title. Really all the guys played pretty well today. Allfive of our individuals shot in the 70s, and we are one of a number of teamsthat have a shot to finish right at the top.
"With this being only a two-round tournament, rather than a normalthree-round event, anything can happen tomorrow. If we can put up a goodscore tomorrow we can jump right up in the thick of the team competition."
The 36-hole event will conclude on Tuesday with the final 18-holeround. The tournament is being played at the Keith Hills Country Club inBuies Creek, N.C. The course measures 6,703 yards and plays to a par of 72.
