The Wyoming Cowboys shot the lowround of the tournament in Tuesday's final round of the Campbell UniversityIntercollegiate, and vaulted from a tie for ninth place into a tie forfourth place. UW's round of 287 was not only the best round of the day, butwas the best round of the two-day 36-hole event. Wyoming ended with a final36-hole score of 590 to tie with Charleston Southern for fourth place.North Carolina-Wilmington won the team title with a final score of 585.
Wyoming was led by senior Jake Hunter and freshman Mike Mezei, whoboth tied for sixth place, out of 68 competitors, with two-round totals of145. Mezei shot the low round of the day for the Cowboys with a two-underpar round of 70. His round of 70 also tied for the low individual round forthe two-day event. Hunter fired a final round of 72 -- even par. BrentParrish of North Carolina-Wilmington won the individual title with a 36-holescore of 142. Parrish won a playoff with John Hulwick of Denver for theindividual championship.
All five members of the Cowboy squad shot 74 or lower in Tuesday'sfinal round. Junior Mike Urbatchka shot 71 on Tuesday and finished tied for25th at 149. Senior David Hearn fired a 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tiefor 35th at 151, and sophomore Kurt Kowaluk also shot a 74 and tied for 42ndat 152.
"We played really well on Tuesday" said UW head golf coach RogerPrenzlow. "It was nice to see the guys play a solid final round. Mike(Mezei) shot a 70, Mike Urbatchka a 71 and Jake Hunter a 72. David Hearnand Kurt Kowaluk also played nice rounds today (both shot 74s). Overall, wewere a very balanced team today.
"Jake (Hunter) and Mike (Mezei) played solid both rounds, andeveryone stepped it up in the final round on Tuesday. We knew going intoTuesday that all the teams were grouped close enough that with a good roundwe could make a big move. We ended up shooting the low round of thetournament, and head home with a lot of confidence."
The Cowboys entered Tuesday's final round in a tie for ninth-place.They moved past four teams on Tuesday, and pulled even with a fifth,Charleston Southern, to tie for fourth place. Individually, Hunter moved upfive places in the final round, and Mezei moved from a tie for 27th onMonday to a tie for sixth at tournament's end, passing 21 golfers.
The Campbell University Intercollegiate was played at the KeithHills Country Club in Buies Creek, N.C. The course measured 6,703 yards andplayed to a par of 72.
Next up for the Cowboy golf team is a dual meet with the Universityof Denver on April 9 in Denver. UW's next tournament will be at the BYUCougar Classic on Friday and Saturday, April 20-21 in Provo, Utah.
