Pokes Tied Second after First Day of Wyoming Cowboy Classic

The University of Wyoming men's golf team sits tied for second place, firing a 562 (-14) after the first day of the Cowboy Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. Three Pokes finished in the top-10 after the second round. Senior Kamrin Allen leads the Cowboys as he carded a 138 (-6) to finish his day tied for fourth place. Junior Ryan Wallen and sophomore Drew McCullough are tied for seventh after carding 140 (-4) each.

“The guys played really well today,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “I wasn’t sure how we would play because of the weather in Laramie the past week but our guys stayed focused and had a good day.”

Sophomores Glenn Workman and Quintin Pope rounded out the scorers for Wyoming as they tallied scores of 145 (+1) and 150 (+6), respectively. Sophomore Arron Lickteig and freshman John Murdock played as individuals. Lickteig fired a 146 (+2) as Murdock carded a 149 (+5).

“We are truly grateful to play in such a wonderful facility,” Jensen added. “There is still a lot of golf to play and we need to stay focused in a tough field like this.”

Sam Houston State leads the 19-team field with a score of 558 (-18). UW and Colorado are tied for second with a 562 (-14). Western Kentucky and William & Mary round out the top-five for with scores of 571 (-5) and 575 (-1), respectively.

Jake McCrory of Sam Houston State leads the individual golfers after tallying a 134 (-10). Colorado’s Jeremy Paul and UC Santa Barbara’s Brandon Bauman are tied for second with a score of 137 (-7).

The Cowboy Classic will conclude tomorrow after one round that starts at 8:30 a.m. MT.
