A record 24 teams and 130 individuals opened play in the eighth annual University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland Golf and Srixon, on Monday with a full day of golf at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The field completed the first round and had three or fewer holes remaining in the second round when the sun set and play was halted. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with the completion of the second round and all 18 holes of the third round. The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m. and the third round will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Through the first 18 holes, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos lead the field after posting a team round of 275 (-5). Oklahoma and Colorado are tied for second place with a first-round score of 279 (-1).

Individually, Nevada's Taylor Coffman leads the tournament after an opening-round 65 (-5). Coffman's 65 is tied for the third best round in Cowboy Classic history. UC Santa Barbara's Russell Boring, Oklahoma's Tyler Rody and UC Riverside's Scott Clayton are all tied for second place after an opening-round 66 (-4).

The Cowboys are tied for 17th place after an opening-round 291 (+11). Individually, junior Phil Henzlik led the Cowboys with an even-par 70, which placed him in a tie for 24th place. Junior Gabe Maier was UW's second-best finisher with an opening-round 72 (+2). Maier is tied for 47th place.

"This is a great event and today was a terrific day of college golf," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "The weather was beautiful and we played golf all day. This is the largest field in the tournament's history, and it was a lot of fun to watch these young men compete."As for our team, I am very disappointed in how we played the first round. However, we were playing better in the second round before we stopped play. We have about 21 holes remaining and we need to improve our score over that stretch."

The tournament is being played on the North Course at Talking Stick, which plays to a par of 70 and measures 7,133 yards in length. All eight Cowboy Classic events have been played at Talking Stick.
