SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The largest University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic came to an end on Tuesday as the 24-team and 130-individual field played the final few holes of the second round and all of the third round. The eighth annual event was played at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The host Wyoming Cowboys closed out the tournament by posting their best team round of the 2009-10 season during Tuesday's third round. The Cowboys closed out the event with a score of 277 (-3), which was the second best third round in the field. They combined that with a second round 293 (+13) to close out the event with a three-round score of 861 (+21). With their impressive finish, the Pokes jumped all the way to sixth place in the final team standings.
Individually, three Cowboys placed in the top-20 of the field. They were led by Gabe Maier and Zach Zaremba, who each tied for 12th place with a three-round score of 213 (+3). Each player closed out the tournament in style by shooting a 67 (-3). For Maier, this marks his 13th career top-25 finish and for Zaremba it is his seventh career top-25. Redshirt freshman Clinton Boutelle also had a very good tournament and finished in a 17th place tie with a three-round scorecard of 214 (+4). That marked Boutelle's second career top-25 finish.
Cal State Northridge won the 2010 Cowboy Classic by posting a three-round score of 841 (+1). San Diego placed second 850 (+10) and Western Carolina was third 854 (+14).
Individually, San Diego's Gunner Wiebe won the event by posting a three-round score of 203 (-7). Cal State Northridge's Jeff Freund placed second with a 205 (-5) and Oklahoma's Ben Blundell placed third at 208 (-2).
"This is one of the biggest college events in the country, which makes it special," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "To have 130 players from across the country playing in an event that we host is a lot of fun.
"I give our kids a lot of credit for coming back after a very disappointing start. To have the second best score in today's third round, as well as our best round of the season, was a testament to our kids' work ethic."
The tournament was played on the North Course at Talking Stick Golf Club, which plays to a par of 70 and measures 7,133 yards in length. All eight Cowboy Classic events have been played at Talking Stick.
The Cowboys will return to the golf course on April 12-13 when will play in the UM Bank Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo.
