The University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team completed the first two rounds of the Cowboy Classic on Monday at the Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. In the 21-team field, the Pokes currently sit in 14th place with a total of 585 (+25). Leading the way for the Cowboys was sophomore Kamrin Allen with a two-round total of 144 (+4). Allen is tied 34th in the 115-man field.
“First, we want to thank Talking Stick and Cleveland Golf for sponsoring our tournament,” Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. “The course was in tremendous shape and it is always great to be able to play here. Like it is every year, this tournament is bunched at the top with some good teams.”
Wyoming shot a score of 289 (+9) to put them in 15th place during the morning round. Allen led the way during the first round with a 71 (+1). Senior Brent Baylon was one shot behind with a score of 72 (+2), while senior Eddie Stewart and freshman Ryan Wallen each recorded a 73 (+3) during the first round. Eric Parish hit a 79 (+9), as junior’s P.J. Thomas and Cameron Lindell, who are playing as individuals shot a morning round score of 74 (+4) and 76 (+6), respectively.
“We are just a few shots from moving up multiple spots,” Jensen said. “Tomorrow we need to pull together a better overall day. I know we want to play better and move up in this field. We have a great opportunity to catch some teams and tomorrow we will make the most of it.”
The Cowboys shot a 296 (+14) during the second round with Allen once again the highest finisher for Wyoming with a 73 (+3). Baylon shot a 74 (+4) during round two and is tied 48th with a total tally of 146 (+6). Stewart has a two-round total of 148 (+8) after his second round score of 75 (+5). Stewart sits tied for 58th with tomorrow’s final round remaining.
Parish recorded an 81 (+11) in the afternoon round and has a two-round total of 160 (+20). To round out the Pokes, Thomas has a two-round score of 157 (+17), while Lindell has a total score of 158 (+14).
Leading the Cowboy Classic individually is Sean Walsh of Gonzaga. Walsh has a two-stroke lead over UC Davis’s Josh Granger and fired a 133 (-7) during Monday’s two rounds. Sitting in third is Pete Fernandez of UC Irvine and Oklahoma’s Michael Gellerman with 136 (-4). Leading the team scoring is No. 11 Oklahoma with a two-round total of 560 (E ). Trailing Oklahoma by one shot is Colorado and BYU in a tie for second.
The Cowboy Classic will continue Tuesday with a final 18-hole round and shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT.
