LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming's Mike Urbatchka and Mike Mezei both shot final rounds of 73 on Tuesday at the Wichita State Shocker Classic to place fourth and 10th respectively in the field of 64 men's golfers. Wyoming placed fifth as a team in the field of 12 collegiate teams.
Urbatchka ended with an even par total of 213 for 54 holes to finish in sole possession of fourth place. Mezei's three-round total of five-over par 218 placed him in a tie with Judd Easterling of Wichita State for 10th place. Gibby Martens of Texas-San Antonio won the individual crown with a 10-under par 203 total. He led his UT-San Antonio squad to an 18-stroke victory over second-place Oklahoma City -- 859 to 877.
The team competition was particularly close, with only seven strokes separating second-place Oklahoma City from fifth-place Wyoming.
"It was a solid tournament for us," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Both Mike Urbatchka and Mike Mezei played well. Urbatchka helped himself in terms of potentially qualifying for the NCAA Regionals later this spring. He beat two players in our region, who are also potential postseason qualifiers.
"As a team, we put ourselves in a position to accomplish our goal of finishing in the top three teams. We entered the final round in second place, but we didn't get the third and fourth place scores today to hold onto that position. Overall, I'm pleased with the effort over the three rounds. We defeated both Denver and Air Force, which were the two teams in our district that we needed to beat in this tournament.
"We have a big tournament coming up next week at BYU. That is a tournament that features a number of top teams from across the West, including a number of teams from our region."
The Wichita State Shocker Classic was played at the Crestview Country Club South in Wichita, Kan. The course played to a par of 71 and measured 6,671 yards.
Wyoming's next tournament will be the BYU Cougar Classic on April 19-20 in Provo, Utah.
