Columbia, Mo. - University of Wyoming Cowboy Gabe Maier is currently tied for the lead following the first two rounds of golf at the Mizzou Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo. The event, which is hosted by the University of Missouri, will conclude on Tuesday with a final round of 18 holes.
Maier, a junior from Cody, Wyo., carded rounds of 69 (-3) and 71 (-1) on Monday and is currently four-under par with a two-round total of 140. He is tied with three other golfers for first place in the 83-man field. Maier has already finished in the top-10 of an event three times this season, which includes winning the 2009 UW Desert Intercollegiate last October.
"Gabe played terrific today and I am very proud of him," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "He has been playing at a very high level all year and continued that today. However, he could have been even better and played the last two holes three-over par. I know he will come back strong and play his game tomorrow. Hopefully he can make a run at winning this tournament."
Behind Maier, redshirt freshman and fellow Cody native Clinton Boutelle is also in the top-20 of the field. Boutelle is tied for 19th after posting rounds of 76 (+4) and 70 (-2) for a two-round total of 146 (+2).
As a team, the Cowboys shot rounds of 292 (+4) and 294 (+6) for a two-round total of 586 (+10). They are currently tied for seventh place in the 15-team field.
"I am encouraged by the way our team played today," Jensen added. "It hurt us that we couldn't get a fourth solid round in the mix during the second round and had to score an 80. However, we are very competitive and are within 10 strokes of the top three. We need to come back tomorrow and get five good rounds so that we can jump over a couple of teams."
In the team standings, Kansas State is leading the event with a two-round score of 571 (-5). Nebraska is in second place at 572 (-4) and the host Tigers are in third place at 576 (E).
Tied with Maier on top of the leaderboard are Kansas State's Joe Ida and Curtis Yonke, as well as Nebraska's Brandon Crick.
The tournament is being played at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The course plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,204 yards in length.
Tuesday's final round will begin with an 8 a.m. (Central Time) shotgun start.
