LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team enjoyed an outstanding day on the first day of the inaugural Wyoming Cowboy Classic being played in Scottsdale, Ariz. Wyoming is in third place in the field of 11 collegiate teams. UW shot a first day total of 590. UW sophomore Matthew Brunk is tied for fourth place, and Wyoming senior Kurt Kowaluk is in eighth heading into Wednesday's final round.
The Cowboys fired rounds of 299 and 291 on Tuesday in the opening two rounds for a 590 team score. They trail the junior varsity teams from San Diego State and Arizona State. SDSU leads at 580. ASU is two strokes back at 582.
UW's Brunk opened with a five-over par round of 75 on Tuesday morning, and followed that with an even par round of 70 in the afternoon for a five-over par total of 145. Kowaluk also opened with a 75, and came back in the second round with a one-over par 71 to finish day one at six-over 146. Three individuals are tied for the tournament lead after 36 holes. Brett Johnson and Charley Smith, both of ASU, and Gilberto Rodriguez of San Diego State are tied at four-over par 144.
Rounding out the five-man team for the Pokes are junior Jason Aichele, tied for 15th at 149; sophomore Dan Silva, tied for 21st at 150; and sophomore Jonathan Shuss, tied for 36th at 154.
"We had a pretty good day," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Matthew (Brunk) really played well in the afternoon round. He was one of only three players to shoot par or better in the second round, and he was one of only five individuals to have a par or better round on the day.
"Kurt (Kowaluk) also came back with a nice afternoon round, shooting 71. This is a beautiful golf course, and we're excited about beginning a new tradition, hosting this tournament in Arizona. We hope it is a tournament that will become an annual event, and an event that will grow in the future."
The first annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic is being played at the Talking Stick North Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. Talking Stick North was recently ranked as the No. 1 public course in the state of Arizona by Golfweek magazine.
The course measures 7,133 yards and plays to a par of 70.
The final 18-hole round will tee off on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., Pacific time.
