The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team competed its first two rounds of play at the BYU Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah on Friday. The Cowboys sit in a tie for 11th-place in the 18-team field with a two round total of 588 (+12). Gabe Maier sits in a tie for 20th-place of the 95-man field with a two round total of 145 (+1).
"We were eight-over after the first few holes today which was a really tough start for us," Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. "Even after a tough start we are still just a few shots out of placing well. I still feel we are a good team and if we just clean up a few mistakes we can be really good."
The first day of the Cougar Classic got off to a late start on Friday because of frost on the golf course, but they were able to complete the first two rounds. During the mornings first round the Cowboys shot a team total of 296 (+14). Senior Phil Henzlik shot the best first round for UW with a one-over 73. Clinton Boutelle and Michael May both shot a two-over 74 during the first round. Maier finished right behind May and Boutelle shooting a first round 75 (+3). Rounding out the UW five junior Casey Ruff shot a first round 79 (+7).
The Cowboys came out during the second round and shot four strokes better as a team with a four-over 292. Maier improved his first round score by five strokes shooting a second round 70 (-2) to finish with a two round total of 145 (+1) tying him for 20th-place. Boutelle and May both shot a 75 (+3) during the second round giving them a two round total of 149 (+5) and tying them for 53rd-place. Henzlik currently sits in a tie for 59th-place after shooting a second round 77 (+5) to give him a total of 150 (+6). Ruff shot a second round 72 (E) to give him a two round total of 151 (+7), which tied him for 67th-place.
"We are going to work hard tomorrow and have a solid finish," Jensen added. "We are going to try and improve and see if we can't move up the leaderboard tomorrow afternoon."
Leading the team scoring after the first two rounds is UNLV with a team total of 565 (-11). Sitting in a tie for second is Colorado State and Pacific with totals of 572 (-4). Rounding out the top five are UC-Davis and Washington State in a tie for fourth place with a total of 575 (-1).
Individually UNLV's Kevin Penner leads after 36-holes with a score of 135 (-9). In second place is Alex Edfort from Pacific University with a total of 137 (-7). In third place is UC-Davis' Matt Hansen with a score of 139 (-5). Rounding out the top five in a tie for fourth place is UNLV's Blake Biddle and Idaho's Damian Telles with a two round score of 140 (-4).
The BYU Cougar Classic will continue Saturday beginning about 8:20 a.m. MT.
