Wyoming Cowboys in Sixth Place After Day One of the BYU Cougar Classic

April 19, 2002

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

It was a very good day for the Wyoming Cowboy golf team on Friday. The Cowboys posted a 36-hole total of 583 to move into sixth place in the field of 15 collegiate golf programs at the Brigham Young Cougar Classic. Wyoming was led by senior Mike Urbatchka, who fired rounds of 72 and 70 for a two-under par total of 142, placing him in a tie for ninth place heading into Saturday's final round.

In addition to Urbatchka, junior Kurt Kowaluk and sophomore Mike Mezei also finished the first day of competition in the Top 25 out of 81 competitors. Kowaluk shot 70 and 75 for a 145 total to place 23rd, and Mezei is just one stroke back at 146 (75-71) to tie for 24th.

Host BYU is in a three-way tie for first place with Colorado State and Nevada. All three teams posted seven-under par totals of 569. Fresno State is in fourth at 570, just one stroke back of the leaders. UTEP is fifth at 577, and Wyoming is sixth at 583.

"We played solid golf throughout today's two rounds," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "I think it is a sign that we are becoming a better team when we don't play our best and yet we still are among the leaders. There are some good teams ahead of us, and we're beating some good teams.

"Mike Urbatchka played really well all day. He had a chance to shoot a 69 in the second round, but missed a two-foot putt on the last hole to shoot 70. All-in-all it was a real solid effort by everyone on the team. If we put another nice round together tomorrow, we have a chance to move up some more. I would be very happy if we put another score up tomorrow like we did in today's two rounds."

The weather on the first day of competition was in the 40s with breezy conditions. The tournament is being played at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The course measures 6,902 yards and plays to a par of 72.

The final round is scheduled to tee off at 9:00 a.m., Mountain time on Saturday, April 20.
